Volunteer Administrators (TAVA)
Promoting volunteer administration as
a profession and facilitating
the exchange of information and experience
TAVA is a professional organization of more than 80 volunteer administrators. It is
sponsored and staffed by the Tulsa Volunteer Center, which promotes and supports
volunteerism and links people with volunteer opportunities in hundreds of non-profit
agencies and organizations. The Volunteer Center is a program of the Community Service
Council of Greater Tulsa, a citizen-led United Way member agency.
History & Purpose ...
In December 1973, a small group of professional volunteer coordinators contacted the
Community Service Council of Greater Tulsa to discuss common interests and concerns about
volunteerism. Resulting from this meeting was the development of a professional
association which provides directors of volunteers the opportunity to exchange information
on current management trends and patterns in volunteerism, and to network with other
The first meeting was January 18, 1974. Initially, monthly meetings were held at
different participating agency locations, with members developing programs on such topics
as recruitment, volunteer staff relationships, job descriptions and volunteer recognition.
In September of 1974 a volunteer fair was held at a shopping mall and volunteer agencies
in the community were asked to participate by staffing booths to represent their agencies.
The event was so successful it developed into an annual volunteer fair.
Presently, the Tulsa Association of Volunteer Administrators (TAVA) is an active
professional association that has monthly meetings for members to continue their
professional development and network with colleagues. The organization participates in the
KOTV Volunteer Month which invites the citizens of Tulsa and surrounding
communities to volunteer with an agency of their choice, and the Volunteer of
the Year Luncheon sponsored by the Williams Companies and
PricewaterhouseCoopers which honors outstanding volunteers from the

Membership is given by agency rather than individual. TAVA members are groups that are
incorporated as non-profit organizations or government agencies (health.
schools. hospitals, civic, arts and cultural).
