Tulsa Association of
Volunteer Administrators (TAVA)

Promoting volunteer administration as a profession and facilitating the exchange of information and experience

is a professional organization of more than 80 volunteer administrators. It is sponsored and staffed by the Tulsa Volunteer Center, which promotes and supports volunteerism and links people with volunteer opportunities in hundreds of non-profit agencies and organizations. The Volunteer Center is a program of the Community Service Council of Greater Tulsa, a citizen-led United Way member agency.

History & Purpose ...
In December 1973, a small group of professional volunteer coordinators contacted the Community Service Council of Greater Tulsa to discuss common interests and concerns about volunteerism. Resulting from this meeting was the development of a professional association which provides directors of volunteers the opportunity to exchange information on current management trends and patterns in volunteerism, and to network with other professionals.

The first meeting was January 18, 1974. Initially, monthly meetings were held at different participating agency locations, with members developing programs on such topics as recruitment, volunteer staff relationships, job descriptions and volunteer recognition. In September of 1974 a volunteer fair was held at a shopping mall and volunteer agencies in the community were asked to participate by staffing booths to represent their agencies. The event was so successful it developed into an annual volunteer fair.

Today ...
Presently, the Tulsa Association of Volunteer Administrators (TAVA) is an active professional association that has monthly meetings for members to continue their professional development and network with colleagues. The organization participates in the KOTV Volunteer Month which invites the citizens of Tulsa and surrounding communities to volunteer with an agency of their choice, and the Volunteer of the Year Luncheon sponsored by the Williams Companies and PricewaterhouseCoopers  which honors outstanding volunteers from the Tulsa community.

Eligibility for Membership ...
Membership is given by agency rather than individual. TAVA members are groups that are incorporated as non-profit organizations or government agencies (health. schools. hospitals, civic, arts and cultural).
